Horsey First Aid back to 6-23

T's leg has this one incision down the front-- this is the one you can see in the picture. And one incision down the back. The bandage keeps bugs & dirt out and keeps him from opening up the wound. Here's what I do:

  • Unwrap his bandage and gently brush off any dirt or shavings.

  • Put STERILE gauze pads over the wound.

  • Put cotton sheeting over the top  the gauze.

  • Wrap  with a standing bandage (a 5-inch non-stretchy bandage about 6 feet long). (This is HARD to do with only two hands.) right up to the knee joint, but not on it.

  • Cotton sheeting sticks out the bottom and top about a 1/2 inch.

  • Secure with with a bandage pin.

  • Wrapp duct tape once around. (T gets bored & think unwrapping is a good hobby.)

  • Check pressure of wrap by putting a finger between the wrap and his leg.

  • Give him a pat and kiss it to make it feel better. (Not really. Just Kidding.)
