Little House on the Prairie: This book has the same characters in it the TV show, but in my opinion, the book is a TON better. Laura and her family leave their house in "the big woods" and set out for Kansas. They get to Kansas, and whoops!, theyve settled in Indian territory. Life is difficult, but Laura and her family take it in stride like total pioneer geeks. All of Lauras books are goodI highly recommend them. Surf on over to Amazon to do the Little House thing. |

Little Women Four girls growing up at the time of the Civil War--but man it's easy to relate to them. Meg, is a domestic goddess, Jo, a tomboy who wonders why girls can't act like boys, Beth, who wouldnt hurt a fly, and Amy the total dilettante artist. We all love Jo, of course, who wants to be a writer. Amy, the spoiled one, gets to go to Europe. Meg finds a husband and Jo finds a career (and also someone to love.) There's a sad part, too, but it's totally worth it. Click here to surf on over to Amazon and buy it. |

Heidi has to go live with her cranky old grandfather because she is an orphan and her aunt doesn't want to deal with her anymore (sound familiar?). Heidi doesnt know what to make of the goat farm in the Swiss Alps. Of course Grandfather isnt quite as gruff as everyone thinks. Peter, the goat boy, teaches Heidi all she needs to learn about goats, and she even gets to know them by name. And Heidi becomes great friends with Clara, a physically-challenged rich girl, who discovers with Heidi the benefits of mountain air and goats milk. Click here to surf on over to Amazon and buy it. |

Secret Garden: Both of Marys parents die and she has to go live with her uncle on his estate. Mary is really unhappy (no doubt!) but soon she makes good friends with her cousin Colin, who cant walk, and another boy, Dickon, who works magic with animals. A locked-up garden at their manor on the Yorkshire moors is like this totally cool place and the three begin to work together to restore it to its original grandeur. Not only does Mary realize that there is life beyond losing her parents, she also helps Colin grow closer to his uncle AND learn to walk again. Now THERE's a summer project. Amazon's got it. |

Anne of Green Gables: Anne is an orphan, (orphans are big in these stories, arent they?) who is adopted by brother and sister, Marilla and Matthew. Marilla and Matthew live in a beautiful Canadian town. Anne falls in love with the town and its natural surroundings. Anne is willful and imaginative, and tons of fun to read about! Yep, if it exists, Amazon has it. |

A Little Princess: Its riches to rags back to riches again for Sara Crewe, the pampered but really totally cool child of a British officer. When reports come in that her father is dead, Sara becomes a scullery maid at Miss Minchin's boarding school. Friendship and spunk keep Sara going until her father reappears and they're totally rich again. (Like that EVER happens). Amazon, here I come. |
